Getting started

What to expect from a pension review

A pension review is a conversation about where you are, where you'd like to be, and whether anything needs to change. Here's what it involves.

How it works with us

  1. You answer 4 short questions about your pensions and what you'd like help with.
  2. Our UK team calls you at a time that suits you to confirm a few details and answer your questions.
  3. We introduce you to an FCA-regulated adviser firm, who arranges your free first review. You don't pay us anything.

What to have ready

You don't need everything, but these help the adviser get a clear picture quickly:

  • recent statements for each pension you have, including old workplace pensions
  • your State Pension forecast
  • a rough list of savings, investments and property
  • any debts, such as a mortgage
  • whether you have a will, and who you've nominated to receive your pensions

What happens in the review

Expect the adviser to ask a lot of questions. They'll want to know about your health, family, plans and how you feel about investment risk. A good adviser listens more than they talk.

They'll usually look at:

  • whether you're on track for the income you want
  • what you're paying in charges, and how your pensions are invested
  • your options for taking money out, including tax-free cash
  • how your pensions fit with inheritance tax and passing money on

After the review

The first review is free and there's no obligation. If you'd like the adviser to make a formal recommendation or look after your pensions, they must explain their fees clearly, in writing, before you agree to anything. You can take time to think, ask questions, or decide not to go ahead.

Checking who you're dealing with

  • Look up the adviser firm on the FCA Register and check the contact details match.
  • Be wary of pressure to decide quickly, promises of guaranteed returns, or offers to access your pension before 55.
  • A genuine adviser will never ask you to move money into an account in their own name.

Pension Clarity is an introducer. We don't give financial advice. Free, impartial guidance is also available from Pension Wise if you're 50 or over.
